DIMANCHE ROUGE PRESENTS JOHN GISKES: BUTOH DANCE– 9-10/08/2013

Dimanche Rouge presents Dutch butoh dancer and teacher, John Giskes, at the Plateforme Gallery on August 9th and 10th. Giskes will perform Friday, August 9th at 8pm, followed by a one day workshop titled “Birth Membranes” on Saturday, August 10th from 11am-6pm. The workshop will include drinks, tea and a vegetarian meal, for a registration fee of 30 euros. Advanced registration is required for the workshop, and the performance is free admission to all.

John Giskes is a visual artist based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Since 2007 he started movement theater De Storm in order to work together with other artists b (visual- dance- and music artist) The movement vocabulaire is strongly influenced by the contemporary Japanese dance ‘Butoh’. Modern dance celebrates the young / strong body Butoh celebrates all ages and abilities. John’s use of costumes and attributes is typical.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

The theme of the workshop revolves around expanding ‘birth membranes’ and development throughout lifetime. The workshop will be divided into two related sections. The first portion is centered on Butoh imagery, known as “Butoh fu,” and the second part involves experimentation with “membrane inventions.” Participants will be guided to collaborate and develop a short performance along. Vegetarian lunch is included.

Schedule:
11am: Part 1 – Movements around Butoh fu (drawings)
1:30pm: Break – vegetarian meal
2:30pm: Part 2 – Creating your own membrane
3:30pm: Break – Tea
4pm-end: Performances
